Our growing methods
Micro:
We rent about half an acre of the land we are on to grow our vegetables.
Low Till:
We only till to break the ground for a brand new bed. After that we use only a broad fork to aerate deeper soil and a scuffle hoe to make a clean bed in preparation for planting.
Low impact:
We are working towards less and less environmental impact in our farming practices, we do use some plastic in our farming practices but made the commitment in 2023 to not buy or use any new plastic or use plastic if there is a good alternative, natural option. This is a work in progress and we are constantly searching for good natural materials that do not harm our environment.
Beyond Organic:
All of our fertilizing and pest management methods utilize raw materials that are not harmful to the soil, ourselves, or the animals around us.
All of our vegetables can be eaten straight out of the soil and off the plant.
We do not use pesticides of any kind, not even organic pesticides.
Sustainable:
Nutrients are needed to grow vegetables, they use the nutrients present in the soil. To make sure we do not deplete the soil of its health, we use compost, cover crops, straw and more to put organic matter back and nutrients back into the soil so that we always leave more than we take ensuring that future generations will be able to grow food.
Feeding Community:
Our mission to is provide fresh vegetables for our surrounding community. This is done in a few different ways but our main focus is our CSA and it's "all you can eat" model. We do sell to some local stores and restaurants and also have a farm stand that is open to the public throughout the growing season as well. And every week we donate anything left over to our local food pantry, none of our food goes to waste and everyone gets fresh vegetables!
The few vegetables that go beyond human consumption go to our egg layers, they devour them happily and give us eggs, so we still get to eat those vegetables.

Testimonials
We've been very happy members of the Alma Roots CSA for two years and it's been a consistently very tasty and satisfying experience. We love the take what you want system and we've loved becoming acquainted with new vegetables, especially the tromboncini which magically changes from a summer squash to a winter squash. We feel lucky to have Maya and Alma Roots Farm in the neighborhood.

We love Alma Roots CSA, and Maya! We have been with her since the beginning. It has been so fun to watch the farm grow and see Maya excited about new opportunities each year. We love the take what you will eat model. There are weeks when we just didn’t get to something, and can pass on it, or absolutely love a new crop/variety and had to get extra the next time. The CSA model is something we are very comfortable with and in between seasons I have a hard time preparing food…”What? You mean my fridge isn’t filled with fresh local delicious veggies all the time? I have to decide what to make then go shopping for everything? It’s not just there for me?!” I love picking up my veggies from Maya and planning what the week’s meals will look like based on what she has. There is always a great variety, mixed in with reliable staples. I also enjoy getting to chat with her about all the happenings around the farm. It’s a highlight of my week.
